Tips for new buildings

Are you looking for a new heating system? You can reduce your heating costs by installing a modern, economical heating system. At the same time you will make a significant contribution to climate protection.

Renewable energy is the best choice when it comes to equip new buildings. But also energy-efficient heating systems based on fossil fuels reduce heating costs and CO₂ emissions by an average of 30 per cent. However, not every type of heating system is suitable for every home.

Start the planning stage in good time

Include the right type of heating as early as possible when planning your new home. In this way you can carry out your construction projects according to your new heating system.

The output of your heating system

Of course, your new heating system must provide enough heat. The same also applies to your drinking water supply: hot water should be available from any tap at all times in the desired quantity.

Make sure that your new heating system has the flexibility to be upgraded. In this way your heating installation will meet your requirements, even if your needs increase unexpectedly.

Heating is not only about the output, but also the amount of energy that is put into operating the system. It may therefore make financial sense to invest in a more efficient system to minimise your heating costs in the long run.

Your heating and hot water preparation needs

The number of people in your new home and the area to be heated determines the amount of heat you need and therefore the output. It's better to plan for slightly more than your maximal requirements. This will ensure that you can enjoy plenty of hot water when every member of the family decides to have a long hot bath.

A rule of thumb applies when calculating your energy requirements. The kilowatt hour (kW) is the billing unit for energy delivered to consumers by electric utilities:

kW heating capacity (number of m² x 50 W/m²: 1,000)

+ kW hot water output (approx. 30% of the above value)

= kW rated heat output

According to this formula, for a low energy house with 130 m² living space the result is 8.5 to 9 kW rated heat output. The rated heat output is the maximum attainable power output of a heating system in continuous operation.

Your Vaillant heating specialists can determine the exact requirements, which relate to your individual method of construction, the floor space, façade insulation and sanitary accessories.

Hot water convenience: centralised or decentralized

How do you want to ensure the supply of hot water? You can choose between a cylinder in the basement or a water heater near the taps. A central hot water supply via a sufficiently large hot water cylinder is especially convenient. A space-saving combination unit is ideal for lower requirements. And an economical electric water heater is suitable for individual, distant taps.

Choosing the right energy source

Basically, it is advisable to completely meet your heat requirements with renewable energy sources such as ambient heat, solar or pellets. In this way you will be prepared for dwindling resources, rising energy prices and the increasing requirements to protect the climate.

Nevertheless, using proven and highly efficient technologies based on fossil fuels can also be sensible. This all depends on your circumstances and preferences.

You also have the option of cleverly combining different technologies with each other, for example, by operating a gas-fired condensing boiler with solar panels.

Where to locate your new heating system

Whether you want to place your heating in the basement, in the living area, or under the roof – we can supply the right solution for any location. The more living space, the better. We therefore build our modern heaters so that they offer great performance in a small space. Depending on the availability of space different systems are preferable.

The basement is the right place for a heat pump. Combined Heating and Power (CHP) and pellet boilers with pellet storage containers are also ideally located here. The same applies to condensing boilers and large hot water cylinders for multi-family houses and commercial businesses. Of course you can also install a space-saving wall-mounted heater in the basement, for example if you want to fully utilise the room as a hobby room or gym.

In the living area you still have plenty of space for a gas-fired condensing boiler - even if every square metre of floor of your living area has already been planned for. Our wall-mounted heaters come in many output ranges for small, medium and large requirements.

A good place for a gas-fired condensing boiler with solar support is in the attic. This is especially true when it comes to a compact Vaillant condensing boiler. The short distance to the solar panels reduces heat loss. The air/flue gas duct can be placed directly through the roof without the need for a chimney.

The preferred heat distribution

In general: The larger the heating surface is, the lower the temperature the new heating system must produce and the more efficiently it operates. From an energy point of view, underfloor heating is therefore ideal for heating in new buildings. It saves space and can provide you with the heat required at low temperatures. Underfloor heating is an excellent foundation for modern systems such as heat pumps or solar thermal systems.

Consider the ventilation

A central ventilation unit with heat recovery is perfect: It filters out dust, pollen, CO₂ and conducts moisture to the outside. Thereby it transfers the heat from the exhaust air to the fresh air. The central ventilation ensures a healthy indoor climate and prevents mould, which can damage the building structure. Our intelligent home ventilation can be combined with all heating systems. Thereby reducing the heating need by at least 20%, so that less energy is required for the heating unit.

Financing and funding

The investment for a new heating installation can be significantly reduced with proper planning and advice. You do not have to pay for everything at once. Make sure the new heating system can be upgraded in the future - for example with a solar thermal system.

You may qualify for government funding when purchasing a new heating system, which will also reduce your investment costs. The use of renewable energy is supported financially.

The right heating system

There is no standard solution when searching for the right heating system. But finding the system that fits your needs is not that difficult. Talk with your Vaillant heating specialists. They can assist you in planning your new heating installation.
